Orphan Care
With the AIDS pandemic spreading throughout Africa, many children have been orphaned. Others have extended family members who are willing to look after the children but have little or no income themselves.
The Churches of Christ adopted two approaches to this dilemma. A Children’s Village was established in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe for 100 children who have no living family members to care for them. The children are fed, clothed, housed, and their school fees are paid. A church has also been established on the farm which neighboring farmers also attend. There is a pre-school on the farm and older children are bussed into Bulawayo. The cost to sponsor one of these children is $30 per month, more is always welcome. And, you’re allowed to communicate with your child via letters or gifts.
The second approach was the establishment of the Community Orphan Care Program. This is the program I support. Currently, 102 children are able to receive an education in a local school. If a child has a parent or relative willing to keep them but doesn’t have the money to do so, the child is placed in the Orphan Care program. The children continue to live with their families, but medical care, school fees, and basic supplies like cornmeal, cooking oil, dry beans and soap are provided. The children are encouraged to complete high school and attend a trade school. In this way, they will be able to support themselves and their families.
Orphan Care currently has 3 students in university, 5 at trade schools, 8 high school graduates looking for work, 45 high schoolers, and 39 elementary school children. The cost to support one child in the Orphan Care program is $15 per month.
